A beautiful, cabinet-quality coin in mint condition. The coin has a natural surface luster and an even patina from its time in a collection.
The first issue of Gdańsk gold coins.
Gdańsk expanded its minting operations during the final years of Augustus III of Saxony’s reign. This was the city’s response to the growing influx of low-value, poor-quality foreign coins, including “efraimki” (counterfeit coins of Frederick II, struck with Polish dies). The city council commissioned the minting of coins in denominations ranging from a szeląg to a dwuzłotówka. Ultimately, the highest denomination in this issue was the złotówka (dwuzłotówki were minted only as a trial batch).
