One of the rarest— and undoubtedly the most striking—varieties of Władysław’s Lviv groschen
This is a high-denomination issue for Red Ruthenia (Halych), which Władysław received as a fief from King Louis in 1372.
A variant lacking the king’s title , with the reverse legend incorrectly placed on both sides. On both the side bearing the “W” monogram—which reads “MONETA RVSSIE”—and the side with the lion, the reverse additionally features two errors:“MONEIARWSSIE.”
A quarter-thaler without the ruler’s name, attributed to Edmund Kopicki, was known from only one collection (that of Jan Stupnicki of Lviv), which he classified as grade R8.
In Andriy Križaniwskij’s specialized catalog, it is graded R6 and dated to the year 1375.
First time in our collection.
Silver, diameter 19 mm, weight 1.13 g.
