Among all the varieties of Elbląg groszy—more than 70 in total—described by Grzegorz Romańczyk in his catalog of Sigismund the Old’s municipal groszy, only one had the abbreviated denomination “GROSS” instead of the typical “GROSSVS.” However, this was a different reverse side than the undescribed one.
This one differs from the one illustrated in the catalog in that the name of the city is written differently—ELBINK instead of ELBINGK (the letter G is missing).
The king’s title is correct, ending with PRV.
It is double-struck on the reverse, but the misalignment does not affect the key elements of the variety. A very nice obverse.
Includes a slip from the Elbląg grosz collection.
