A very rare variety of King Sigismund Augustus’s last 2-denar coin.
This is a late variant for 1570, featuring dies made by Petras Platine instead of the dies by Albert Kerlein that were common for that year. It is distinguished, among other things, by a different date style (“1” resembling an Arabic numeral, no serifs on the 57), as well as a smaller Pogoń.
The prevalence of Kerlein’s dies is well illustrated by numismatic archives. In our collection, there are 2(!) Platina two-denars compared to nearly fifty of the latter. The last one was acquired in 2018.
