The 100 guilders were issued twice by the Bank of Danzig. The first time was in 1924, and then repeated in exactly the same design with the date 1931.
The relative availability of the same-looking 1931 100 guilders gives the misleading impression that this is a generally available type, but this is definitely not the case with the 1924 vintage!
The 1924 100 guilders is one of the rarest banknotes of the Bank of Gdansk's guilder issue. Rare regardless of the state of preservation!
Even in circulating condition, it is far rarer than issue pieces of 500 or 1,000 guilders, and is virtually non-existent in fine condition.
This is most likely due to the fact that, in practice, it was probably the highest denomination of daily circulation, and at the same time a banknote with high purchasing power. The 500 and 1,000 guilders most likely did not circulate intensively in daily urban circulation and, as a result, quite a few of them were preserved in bank stocks, from which they were transferred to archives after the liquidation of the WMG and then found their way to the collectors' market.
The 100 guilders of 1924, on the other hand, were not preserved in the stocks, as by the early 1930s they had already worn out so much in circulation that there was nothing to replenish circulation with, and it was decided to renew them with the date 1931, 8 years before the outbreak of the Second War.
Between 1928 and 1931 the denominations of 10 and 25 guilders were also reissued, but these were withdrawn from circulation until 1934, while both issues of 100 guilders remained in circulation until September 1939. The long period of circulation and the large denomination meant that the first issue of 100-guldenka naturally wore out in circulation.
A tremendously rare item.
A natural piece, in circulated condition, but not heavily worn by circulation. Quite a few bends, but no abrasions. A well-preserved piece.
Definitely recommended.
