Huge rarity in a banknote in natural circulated condition, but not worn by circulation.
Traces of folds, and folds not fixed strongly and without rubbing on them. Edges without any tears, only a small cut on the lower left corner on the obverse side, but not an all-over tear.
A fragment of a standard ink stamp (probably from stamping on the banderole binding the file) is reflected on the portrait. Paper with natural, circulation soiling. A banknote without any conservation treatment, but with a lot of potential in this regard, both cleaning the soiling and licking the stamp fragment.
Very high rarity type of only one year.
Gold certificates for $500 were issued only in 1928. It was an undersized issue of only 424,000 pieces, of which, according to data reported for the US market, only less than 400 could remain in circulation, and the existence of only about 100 pieces is recorded. In terms of the US market, this is a negligible amount, and as a result, the very high quotations of the few pieces of this type appearing in trade are not surprising. Banknotes in VF 30-35 condition listed in the last 5 years have exceeded $10,000, the last listing in January this year was $14,400 for a VF30. The cheapest piece we came across was a repaired banknote with tape-lined tears, graded at F12 and sold for $5,280 in the fall of 2022.
The present one in attractive, healthy condition from natural circulation.
Definitely recommended.
