Piece Ex. Marciniak A8/2663 currently on display much cheaper due to the sale of the numismatic library, due to the change of residence of the collector.
This catalog is the first distinguished and pioneering study of Polish medals. Feliks Bentkowski was appointed curator of the collection at the University of Warsaw. He writes in the introduction as follows:
"... I considered it my duty to present to the public first of all what our University possesses in Polish numismatic artifacts, or those connected with Polish history, before a list of other numismatic artifacts was prepared, starting with medals and then moving on to coins. However, at this time I was instructed by the King. Society of Friends of Science in Warsaw, to supplement the section of the late Mr. Albertrande's "Historya polska medal zaświadczona i objaśniona" (History of the Polish Medals Certified and Explained), and to take care of publishing it for the public. Having looked through Albertrande's manuscripts themselves and the inventory from them by Wlad. Hr. Ostrowski carefully made, I saw that very many medals were unknown to Albertrande, or at least not mentioned by him at all..."
The result of Bentkowski's work is the present catalog, compiled largely on the basis of the University of Warsaw's collection, which was taken to Russia after the November Uprising and from there never returned in its full form.
Bentkowski's catalog is a significant item and at the same time very rare to find on the market.
It is well preserved in a half-leather binding from the first half of the 19th century. With an ex-libris of A.K. Batowski by the well-known graphic artist Kajetan W. Kielisinski and two ownership stamps.
Original edition of 1830. Format ~ 13 x 20.5 cm. Complete with texts and engravings. Excellent state of preservation.
