The first underground edition of Aleksander Kaminski's Kamienie na szaniec, published in Warsaw in 1943, is one of the most important works of war and occupation literature. Describing the dramatic and heroic fate of members of the Grey Ranks, the book was not only a literary tribute to their sacrifice, but also a strong expression of opposition to the German occupation and a symbol of the indomitable Polish spirit during World War II.
