Kazimierz Stronczynski's works are fundamental positions for Polish medieval numismatics. His first work dates from 1947 and covers the money of the Piasts up to 1300, compiled on the basis of excavations known up to that time. The author took up the subject again in 1883, already publishing a much more extensive three-volume study covering Polish coins up to the end of the reign of Stefan Batory.
Part I, "Coins of the First Four Centuries Explained by Excavations," a part maintained in the convention of the 1847 edition, but compiled taking into account new excavations and scientific advances on the subject that have been made since then. Interesting descriptions and numerous engravings in the text help to understand the numismatics of this subject, which is still difficult today. The part in this reissue is enriched by an 11-page introduction about K. Stronczynski by S. Suchodolski.
Part II, "Coins of the first four centuries in chronological order arranged and described".
This part, is, as the author himself writes "...a systematic inventory of our medieval coins.... but an elaborate list, preceded in each reign by a general view of the totality of the types minted in its course, indicating where each of these coins came from, in which collections its specimens can be seen and how it was valued in the numismatic trade.... this part is intended mainly for the use of collectors of our minted monuments...." The text includes numerous engravings of the coins described, as well as the basic types of coins are collected at the end, on 22 plates. Since Polish medieval numismatics are still alive, the authors of this reprint-edition have supplied this section with tables of current attribution of the described coins. This is a total of 11 additional pages in the introduction of the book.
Part III, "Coins of the 14th XV and 16th Centuries Arranged and Explained."
This part covers coins after 1300, starting with the penny period, then we have coins of Jadwiga, Wl. Jagiello and Wl. Warnenczyk, including his Hungarian coins, coins of Kazimierz Jagiellon and Jan Olbracht. The 16th century includes coins of Zg. I the Old, Zg. Augustus and Stefan Batory. A great advantage of this study is the interesting descriptions of individual coins. The book contains numerous images of coins in the text, as well as their basic types included on 13 tables.
