Lot description
Grade: XF/XF+
Reference: Kahnt 688.-, Kopicki 2113

A very rare portrait type for this vintage - described in Kahnt's catalog as "broad head", but described therein only for the 1756 vintage (Kahnt 689.d).

Very nice state of preservation. Mint fresh coin.

Type not included in the study by Peter Anuszyczyk. According to the author, this is because it is a Prussian forgery of the era to the detriment of the Polish issuer. The issue in the type of common efraim, but coming from a different workshop. Mr. Piotr, based on an analysis of the style of the coin, speculates that the stamps may be by Pribus. An engraver who began working at the Leipzig mint in 1752, which at the time was minting coins for the Polish king. In 1756, after the Prussians occupied Saxony, he moved on to work at the Prussian mint, in Magedburg. It is very likely that there he used his experience from Leipzig in preparing stamps for Polish coins and made such on behalf of the Prussians.

A distinguishing feature, according to Mr. Piotr Anuszczyk, of this issue is, among other things, the 5 thongs on the royal arm, which is only found on this type. All other orts typically have 4, or 3-1/2 thongs, so perhaps this was a deliberate distinguishing mark for insiders of the era.

To quote the words of Mr. Peter Anuszczyk, "this is a very interesting coin, as a precise forgery of the era".

Undoubtedly, it is a very interesting and rare ort. The present one preserved in a beautiful state of preservation.

We treat the theory presented by Mr. Piotr Anuszczyk, in the case of this coin, as an interesting hypothesis, which undoubtedly still requires further research, reference to source materials and metrological studies. The latter may be very relevant to the whole issue, since visually and externally, the type nevertheless appears to be a full-value issue, and not as in the case of typical efrim coins, where the fact of issuance from a lower-quality metal is noticeable "by eye."

The above theory is presented here as a justification for the lack of presence of this type in the detailed study of Augustus III's orts by him.
