Lot description
Grade: VF
Reference: Kopicki 21 (R6), Frynas P.1.19 (Very Rare)

A very rare type of denarius, from a cherished reign.

The minting of Boleslaw the Brave, in addition to his most famous denarius, the Princess Polonie, brings to Polish minting a number of very rare coin types. Most known from single pieces. The present one fits into this characteristic.

A denarius of the REX type, that is, the only denarius of the Brave with a royal title - REX (king).

The type dated in the literature to the issue of 1015-1020, before the king's coronation, intended to confirm Boleslaw's royal aspirations.

A very rare double-sided print.

Gniezno (?) mint.

Numerous traces of age-checking of the silver (cuts and bending), but the plate is sound, sound, with a slight luster.

Obverse: Greek cross, rings in the fields, legend in the rim.

Reverse: cross with arms ending in beams, in the rim a legend.

Silver, diameter 20 mm, weight 1.02 g.
