Formed as a result of the secularization of the Order of the Knights of the Sword, the principality of Courland and Semigallia was a fiefdom of the Republic of Poland, minting coinage in accordance with the Polish monetary system. Among the denominations minted at their mint, Mitava, there were trojaks. The first of these was minted by Prince Gotthard Kettler. It is considered a trial issue. We owe the regular issuance of this denomination in this fief only to his sons Frederick and Wilhelm. The former began minting trojaks in 1596, from 1598 minting them jointly with his brother. Regularly, until 1606.
