In terms of minting quality, this is one of the nicest Elblag trojak we have had on offer. An even, centered, deeply struck coin, without sheet defects or scarcity common to this period of the Elblag mint. Nice presence highlighted by a dark patina. The reverse retains a very nice luster.
In 1626, Elblag falls into the hands of the Swedes led by Gustav II Adolf of the Vasa dynasty. The Swedes, who during this ten-year occupation (1626-1635), begin issuing coins. First under the Swedish stamp, and from 1628 a low-value coin, imitating Polish issues.
The first Elbląg trojaks with Gustav's bust were minted in 1631. First placing on them the mint mark of a heart (Steffensen's), and later a cardinal's hat (Marcello Phillipsen's coat of arms), as on the present piece.
