During his reign, two mints operated in Paris: one traditional, minting coins by hand, and the other mechanized. This was because his father, King Henry II, had purchased machines in Augsburg for the mechanical production of coins. They were installed on the island of Cité on the Seine. This second Paris mint was named "Moulin" (meaning mill) because of its use of the hydraulic power of the water wheel to produce minted disks. Due to the miners' opposition to mechanical coinage production, it only minted copper coins, pietarts and medals during the reign of Henry de Valois.
