The rarest variety of the 1657 Danzig ducat.
The first vintage of ducats of Daniel Lesse, who took over the mint after the death of Gerhard Rogge. It is his initials (D-L) that appear on all Danzig ducats of this vintage. The issue varied in terms of the drawing of the king and his titulature.
The present one is a type with a slender portrait of the king and the titulature IOH CAS... D L R P, and the notation GEDANEN on the obverse.
Among the 5 varieties listed in "Vasa Dynasty Gold", this one not only has the highest degree of rarity, but was unknown to Jaroslaw Dutkowski from contemporary listings. The only auctions where it was listed were Chelminski (1904) and Philipp (1907). Unlisted in Marek Kaleniecki's study on "Polish gold coins at world auctions 1945-2002".
A nice coin. Slight overdevelopment. A cut in the lower part of the reverse. Other than that, good detail and presentation.
