The first vintage of ducats by Daniel Lesse, who took over the mint after the death of Gerhard Rogge. It is his initials (D-L) that appear on all Danzig ducats of this vintage. The issue varied in terms of the drawing of the king and his titulature.
A variety with a bust of the ruler with a characteristic large nose.
Rare for Danzig ducats abbreviated obverse legend, ending with REX POL.& SUEC.M.D. (King of Poland and Sweden, Grand Duke - no L from Lithuania).
Mint coin with scratches in front of the portrait. Very striking. Deep, double minted ducat with preserved natural mint luster / background mirror. Mint reverse.
Polish gold from the royal era is one of numismatic rarities. The Republic, having no gold resources (mines) of its own, issued very few coins in this precious metal. In monetary circulation, the native gold coin was in many periods even an addition to the foreign ducats circulating in the country. This is well demonstrated, for example, by the famous Bydgoszcz Treasure, in which out of 486 gold coins found in the Bydgoszcz Fara, only 5(!) were Polish issues!
