One of the nicest Danzig bicrogroszy we have seen on the antiquarian market.
The coin is evenly, centrally struck, and just as importantly, without the mint sheet flaws so common to this vintage. With luster and very nice detail. With beauty being only a prelude to its uniqueness.
In 1651, in the spirit of the monetary reform introduced at the beginning of the reign of John Casimir, Danzig minted the first two-grosze in the city's history. But contrary to popular opinion, it does not use a roller press to mint the oldest of them, as our specialist Marcin Zmudzin proved.
The first Danzig bicorns were struck using the traditional stamp method.
Before the mint began stamping them with a rolling press, two pairs of hammer stamps were prepared. These were the characteristic stamps with borders (obverse and reverse) and a pair without them (the subject of this auction) - characterized by a richly decorated cartouche with the city's coat of arms. From these two pairs, one hybrid variety was additionally created - with an obverse with a border and a reverse with a decorated cartouche.
All these three varieties, minted with stamps, are today coins of great rarity.
In our history we have had only one piece each of two of these varieties(with a border and with two borders).
This one we have in our offer for the first time!
