For the first time at auction in Poland!
Here is a coin absent from the great magnate collections: Potocki, Hutten-Czapski, Sobanski, nor in any of the four great pre-war collections. Not listed in Marek Kaleniecki's study of gold coins at foreign auctions, nor on the contemporary antiquarian market.
The rarest vintage of the Wschowa dwudukat of King John Casimir, but also one of the rarest for the entire denomination.
The 1653 dwudukat is a coin known so far only from two pieces - one from a private collection and the other from the famous Kosice treasure (now in the Museum of that city). In the study of Jaroslaw Dutkowski on the specified degree of rarity R8.
A natural, circulated piece. With nice relief and presentation. No unusual damage or defects.
Very attractive considering its rarity.
Gold, diameter 28.5 mm, weight 6.88 g.
Obverse: bust of the king in armor and laurel wreath, facing right. In the rim:
IOAN CASIMIR DG REX PO & S.
Reverse: oval, crowned, five-field shield with the coats of arms of Poland, Lithuania and the Vasa dynasty, decorated with broad labrys. On its base the coat of arms of the Great Treasurer of the Crown, Wieniawa. In the rim, separated by the designation of the Wschowa Mint (MW), the legend:
COIN AVREA REGNI AFTER 1653.
