The coin was made to make up for the shortage of a perfunctory coin, the minting of which was undertaken by Christian Schirmer, the warden of the Danzig Mint at the time (for which he received 100 zlotys of remuneration). As Marian Gumowski emphasized in "The Danzig Mint," it was also the first Danzig coin without the city coat of arms.
