Rarity, beauty and provenance - these are three desirable collector's features of this Toronto thaler.
It is a coin from the famous collection of Henry Karolkiewicz. Being only one of two 1641 thalers of Toruń that have appeared at auctions in Poland. The one that is definitely nicer!
The minting of Ladislaus IV made history with its coarse coins - ducats and thalers. It was these denominations that were minted throughout his reign, in both city and crown mints. This is well confirmed by the minting of Toruń. The city minted its first thalers as early as the year of his coronation, and ended only with the king's death.
Thalers in Toruń were minted annually, and today we divide their production into 3 periods. The first was the time of Jacob Jacobson van Emden's activity (1633-1639). Today these are the most popular Torun thalers of this king. Coins from the other two periods are very rare. These are from the administration of Melchior Schirmer (1640-1642) and Gerhard Rogge (1643-1649).
The present piece comes from only three years of Melchior, whose initials were placed on the sides of the shield.
A very rare numismatic piece in the trade.
Known in the Corpus Nummorum Thorunensis only for this 1 variety, estimated to be of high rarity grade R6.
A very nice, natural piece, in the patina of an old collection.
First time in our offer.
