Lot description
Grade: XF+
Reference: Kopicki 6422 (R3), Stronczyński 44.a

A very rare coin that was absent, among others, from the famous collection of medieval coins from our 10th auction.

A denarius of the "prince on horseback / fighting a lion" type, now recognized as an issue of Mieszko I Plątonogi from the Racibórz mint. Dated to the first half of his reign (~1177-1190).

Formerly recognized as an issue of the sons of Wladyslaw the Exile (due to the iconography of the reverse derived from his coins), but also as an issue of the Piasts of Greater Poland (Wladyslaw Laskonogi or Odonic - due to the coincidence of the representation from the obverse with his seal).

First time in our offer.

Beautiful state of preservation. Golden patina. Very good detail.

Obverse: knight / prince on horseback, with raised spear / pennant, facing right. In the rim an inscription.

Reverse: a knight fighting a lion.

Silver, diameter 15.3 mm, weight 0.32 g.
