Let the rarity of this type be evidenced by the fact that it was not in the outstanding medieval collection from our 10th auction.
A chipped coin, but happily preserved all the characteristics of the type (only the decoration under the molding is not preserved).
Bracteate of Mieszko III with a depiction of a half-figure in a mitre, on the molding with the Herbraean inscription bracha(blessing), facing right, towards the tree.
In former studies it was interpreted as an apple tree of paradise (Stronczynski) or the Tree of Life (J. Pininski), among others. Witold Garbaczewski believes that it may have been a desire to portray Mieszko as the "New Aaron" - God's chosen leader.
Unheard of in the trade.
First time in our offer.
