An interesting and very rare issue, which was probably an expression of divine protection for the ruler, country or subjects.
This is a brakteat similar iconographically to another type - with the figure of a prince on a wall, between two towers topped with spheres. The present piece undoubtedly depicts a winged figure, as can be seen by comparing it with a piece from the "envelope collection" offered at GNDM Auction 6(item 490).
The type depicts a figure with outspread wings, behind two pearl arches with a bracha (blessing) inscription between them. A figure in which some scholars see the ruler with wings as an "angel of God," "being the herald of the kingdom of Christ." As Boris Pashkevich points out, "the image may also express the sacred power of the prince's authority."
Chipping of the disc and slight off-centerness, but without affecting the legibility of the type.
A very rare and highly valued brakteat of Mieszko III from his group of Hebrew coins.
Silver, diameter 18 mm, weight 0.10 g.
