Here is an item that was known for decades from only one piece!
A copper penny of King Stanislaw Augustus minted on a trojak disc.
A striking numismatic coin that was first described in 1897 by Charles Plage. He classified it in his monograph of Poniatowski copper coins, citing the only piece known to him, which came from the collection of Gustave Soubise-Bisier. Assigning it the R* rarity grade given to uniques. In subsequent years, the authors of catalogs and price lists either assigned the coin the highest degrees of rarity, or, like Berezowski, a question mark (attributed to coins"by way of exception found in commerce"), or omitted it altogether, perhaps considering it lost to history.
The situation changed only in 2018, as our 5th auction featured an outstanding SAP copper collection, one of the ornaments of which was precisely a penny on a troy disc from the Bisier collection. This one illustrated in the Plage catalog. In the following years, other pieces were unknown, as confirmed, among others, by the author of specialized studies on Poniatowski's copper, Lukasz Gorzkowski, writing about it"it is known in one piece".
Today, 7 years after this auction, we are proud to present you with the second known piece of this coin.
It is a 1766 grosz, from the mint in Krakow, struck on a trojak disc (with its characteristic decorative rim). It was made with the same pair of stamps as the above-mentioned piece, but both in terms of condition and minting quality it is better than it.
When we finished the description of that penny, we took the liberty of writing that another opportunity to buy it might not arise for years. Today we again subscribe to those words.
