One of the rarest trojak of the city of Olkusz.
A coin known on the antiquarian market only from this one piece. Absent from the outstanding collections of Emeryk Hutten-Czapski, Potocki and Tadeusz Iger, among others. Not described in both flagship studies of trojak (Iger, Walewski).
In 1590, the first treasurer of the crown under Sigismund III - Jan Dulski - died. This was reflected in the coins. The place of his initials and Przegonia coat of arms, was taken by the new treasurer - Jan Firley. From that year on, all crown mints included his coat of arms (Lewart) and often his initials as well.
This change can be well seen on the Olkusz trojacks of 1590. The first coins are just with the Przegonia coat of arms in a simple shield, the second, very rare, with the Lewart coat of arms in the same shield, until a new type with an oval, decorative shield is introduced, which is also minted in 1591. The present coin is a new type, unknown to Tadeusz Iger, minted most likely before the introduction of the oval shield. It is distinguished by the stylized typeface of the Lewart coat of arms. A typeface not found on any, other Olkusz trojak.
Ex. 10 RDA auction (sold for 14,000 zl + fee).
A rarity, perhaps even unique.
