A very rare Lithuanian trojak.

A year after the Vilnius mint was opened, this workshop begins issuing trojaks. These are coins minted in accordance with the monetary reform, which not only unified the mint rate in Lithuania and the Crown, facilitating internal trade, but also standardized their appearance.

The first of these trojaks are among the very rare ones. They are characterized by a royal bust dividing the titulature with a fragment of armor, rather than a crown, and the numeral of the denomination above the coat of arms of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (instead of below the bust). The present piece is a representative of this type.

In the archives of Polish companies only a few pieces out of nearly 200 1580 Lithuanian trojaks. In our 20-year history to date, it has occurred only twice - the 9th auction for 32,200 zlotys(item 11) and the 15th auction for 20,060 zlotys (item738).
