A beautiful and rare coin.
The great interregnum that followed the extinction of the royal line of the Jagiellonian dynasty brought two innovations to the Gdansk mint. Not only did it mint its first coins of the interregnum period, but it also did so using new technology. Denars and shekels from this period are the first rolled coins of Gdansk.
Denars are known from two varieties, differing in the design of the shield with the city's coat of arms. The present one is a variety with a shield of 12 arches.
