Royal medal commemorating the coronation ceremony of John III Sobieski and his wife Marysieńka.
A rare numismat which is the work of the Gdansk medalist Jan Höhn the younger. One of a series of medals relating to this historically important moment.
The famous Chocim victory, on the eve of which King Korybut Wisniowiecki died, paved Sobieski's way to the throne. As early as May 21, 1674, he was elected king of Poland at the Electoral Sejm, but due to the difficult situation of the state, his coronation was postponed. It took place only on February 2, 1676.
This is a medal depicting the royal couple - Jan Sobieski Maria Kazimiera de La Grange d'Arquien, known as Marysieńka. With a rich iconography of the reverse, depicting a genius standing by a crowned palm tree, which grows from a signboard with the date of the coronation, against the background of a beautiful panorama of the city of Cracow. The whole is complemented by a beaming sun and the maxim"Let names grow with palm trees."
The choice of the palm tree here is not coincidental, as since ancient times it has been both a symbol of victories, and Sobieski was not lacking in those, but also of durability/survival, which had important overtones in the then difficult situation of the Republic.
Silver, diameter 47 mm, weight 46.35 g.
