Lot description
Grade: XF/XF+
Reference: Hutten-Czapski 6028, ale brąz (R6), Raczyński -

An impressive medal dedicated to the Prince of Siewierz, Bishop of Cracow, Kajetan Soltyk. A figure with an extraordinary biography, who left a trace in the history of Polish numismatics in the form of Siewierz coins.

Made on the order of Michal Soltyk (1740-1815) at the turn of the 18th/19th century. Reference to the commissioner in the last line of the inscription on the reverse S(umptu) M(ichaelis) S(ołtyk)[at the expense of Michał Sołtyk].

Adam Więcek wrote that: "At the turn of the century, however, a series of 15 medals with likenesses of famous Poles was published here, despite the difficult situation, on the initiative and efforts of Cathedral Dean Michał Sołtyk, a great art lover and collector...."

An item of great rarity, as evidenced by the fact that Emeryk Hutten-Czapski only had a bronze print of it, which he gave a very high degree of rarity of R6.

A beautiful high relief medal still in the style of 18th century issues.

Piece from 15 PDA auctions.

To our knowledge, it is currently the only piece in silver, of this typologically and so very rare item.

Recommended.

Silver, diameter 54.5 mm, weight 70.18 g
