The Duchy of Warsaw, established in 1807 by the Peace of Tilsit, left behind many numismatic souvenirs. The mint in Warsaw, which operated on its territory, issued a number of coins in denominations ranging from a penny to a ducat. And while these, in many cases, are among the popular ones, medals from the Principality period are among the great rarities.
In our history, we have had only two such medals in more than 20 years of auction activity. We have this type on offer for the first time.
It is a medal of great rarity, commemorating Vasyl Sergeyevich Lanskoy, who served in the Principality as governor-general (in 1813-1815), as well as chairman of the Provisional Supreme Council of the Duchy of Warsaw. Working with, among others, Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski, he was also one of the authors of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Poland.
The medal was minted on the initiative of the city, with its coat of arms (the Mermaid) on the reverse and the maxim "Warsaw grateful."
Stamped by Friedrich Loos, a Berlin-based medalist (signed in the cross-section of the shoulder LOOS).
