A cork (tropical) helmet is a type of headgear, usually made of cork or tree trunk core, characterized by excellent insulating properties that protect against excessive sunlight.
They were used by PSZnZ soldiers in the Middle East and during campaigns in North Africa. They were part of the equipment in areas with extreme climatic conditions, where high temperatures and intense sunlight posed a threat to the health and combat effectiveness of soldiers. An additional advantage of this type of headgear , also helped with camouflage in desert conditions.
The simple design of tropical helmets, based on materials that were not particularly durable, means that many pieces have not survived to the present day. Over the years, cork or lightweight fabrics have degraded and decayed. As a result, the helmets are very rare and difficult to find in good condition.
