The medal commemorates the "meeting of the three kings"(Dreikönigstreffen), which took place in July 1709.
Its participants were Elector of Saxony Augustus II the Strong (Frederick Augustus), King of Denmark (FrederickII Oldenburg) and King of Prussia (Frederick I Hohenzollern). The goal of the first two was to get the Kingdom of Prussia to join the war against the Swedish king. However, it only resulted in the signing of a friendship agreement, as during this period the Swedish army suffered a defeat at Poltava, which paved the way for Augustus to return to the Polish throne.
