A typologically rare coin.
Throughout the history of Polish coinage, large trojaks were minted only twice. The first time, they were the very first Polish trojaks, struck in Kraków in 1528. The second time came more than 30 years later.
This is a striking, low-fineness issue from 1562, similar in size to six-groschen coins (more than twice as heavy as standard trojaks, with a diameter over 20% larger). Minted only in that single year, it was the last trojak featuring this king’s portrait.
Unfortunately, due to the poor-quality silver used in its minting, as well as the carelessness of the mint workers, the pieces that have survived to this day are in poor condition, a fact also emphasized by Tadeusz Iger.
Variant with the legends LI * / LITV +.
