The last Gdansk penny of King Sigismund I.
It is a clasp that closes a very interesting collector's period of issuing groszes in Gdansk. It is the rarest of all 11 mintages of these coins - both today and in the past, as confirmed, among others, by the catalog of Emeryk Hutten-Czapski(R7). The issue began after an 8-year hiatus in minting pennies in Gdansk and was probably prematurely discontinued due to the death of the king in April of that year.
Wanted and absent from many collections.
In our history to date, 1548 has occurred only 2 times (in 2017 and in 2022).
We have this variety (PRVS / GEDANENS) in our offer for the first time, and according to Norbert Grendel's study, there is only its fourth known piece.
The present piece is very nicely preserved. Obverse with a stronger patina, dampening the luster. Reverse with a beautiful mint fresh background.
