A very rare thaler in an attractive state of preservation.
Not described in the specialized catalog "Thalers of Jan Kazimierz" by Jaroslaw Dutkowski.
Distinguished by type II of the royal portrait (wearing a crown without a headpiece and plain armor), but with the inscription GEDANENS on the reverse (instead of GEDANENSIS). In addition, with an oval shield of arms, supported by lions with a single tail and eight leaves on a branch inside a wreath.
The first vintage of Danzig thalers of this ruler.
A diverse and large issue, which, due to its later fate, has survived to our times in a few pieces. Mainly because of Jan Kazimierz's subsequent monetary reforms. The first, introduced in 1650, which restored the possibility of minting lower denominations. It resulted in the almost complete abandonment of the minting of thaler coinage, which yielded less profit than small coins. And the second, the Mint Ordinance of 1663, and especially the Tymfs it introduced. It was the sub-value of Polish gold that compounded the puncturing of full-value coinage, including the early thalers of Jan Kazimierz, which were snatched from circulation. Because of this, today the 1649 thalers, despite many struck pieces, are rare coins.
Silver, diameter 44 mm, weight 28.73 g.
