A brakteat of great rarity.
A coin most likely unpublished in the literature, not described in reference catalogs on the subject.
Also unknown to a specialist of the period, Witold Garbaczewski.
A brakteat of unspecified attribution, probably 13th century. W. Garbaczewski tentatively dates it to 1225-1250, adding that it is closer to the latter date.
Depicting a schematic bust (head set on a triangle flanked by two circles), next to a cross, on a wall or representative balcony decorated with a semicircle and a cross. It can be a representation of a ruler or a saint.
Stylistically it refers to the simple Wroclaw brakteates from the Ratajsk treasury (of the IOHANNES type), but similar heads are found, among others, on a brakteate from the Cracow group (Paszkiewicz-Haczewska 19). Also, the metrology brings it closer to the second of these groups. It should probably be considered a Malopolska issue from the second quarter of the 13th century.
First time at auction in Poland.
Possibly a rarity.
Silver, diameter 16 mm, weight 0.12 g.
