1540 is a vintage closing a long sequence of successive minting of pennies in Gdansk (years 1530-1540). Being the penultimate penny of this city from the time of King Sigismund, as a small batch of these coins is still minted in the year of his death (1548).
A variety with a "bulldog" bust of the king (type 7 by G. Romanczyk), in a variety with an incomplete chin and a decorated crown rim.
