One of the rarest pennies of Sigismund III Vasa.
A portrait 1614 penny in the type beaten with stamps (rather than stamped on a rolling mill).
Groszes were minted in Bydgoszcz during the entire reign of Sigismund III, but only the latest, most inferior in terms of metal, minted according to the last ordinance, are popular coins. The first pennies were minted before the first reform, in 1596-1599, and are among the very rare ones. The second issue did not occur until 14 years later, in 1613, at the mint opened by the king in 1608, but it lasted a very short time. Just a year later, it was superseded by a new, more profitable denomination - the halftone. They are the last portrait crown pennies of this king.
The royal portrait and the eagle's typeface are stylistically different from those of the rolling pennies. The legend is also distinctive (P M D, no L).
Well minted, with nice detail.
Quotations over the years unitary.
First time in our offer. There is only one other listing in the Onebid archive, from 2005!
