In 1595, Lublin mints its first ever coins.
The mint begins operations, which will go down in its short history of only seven years with a number of large-scale minted trojaks, but also with very rare issues of other denominations. One of these is precisely the sixpences.
They are a staple of Lublin's minting - the highest denomination in the city's history. It was minted in only two mintages.
The present sixpence, the first of its kind, is additionally the opening buckle of the collection of Lublin coins we will offer you in this auction. The mint today enjoys a high collector's esteem.
This is an issue from the early days of the reign of Sigismund III, when this denomination was the largest coin of that king in general circulation. Long before the period of mass issuance of orts, or the later period of dominance of the thaler coin. It was minted even before the reforms that lowered the silver content of the various denominations, resulting in the displacement of good money, such as the early sixpences - taking it out of circulation, remelting it.
