A rare vintage of King Stefan's Danzig ducats.
Polish gold from the royal era is among numismatic rarities. The Republic, having no gold resources (mines) of its own, issued very few coins in this precious metal. In monetary circulation, the native gold coin was in many periods even an addition to the foreign ducats circulating in the country. This is well demonstrated, for example, by the famous Bydgoszcz Treasure, in which out of 486 gold coins found in the Bydgoszcz Fara, only 5(!) were Polish issues!
The variety with the titulature started STEPHAN and a longer branch above the coat of arms.
At the top of the reverse the mint mark (ring) of the Geobl brothers, tenants of the Gdansk mint).
Gold, diameter 21.5 mm, weight 3.44 g.
Obverse: bust of the king in armor and crown, facing right. In the rim:
STEPHAN D G REX POL D PRVS.
Reverse: decorative cartouche with the city coat of arms supported by lions. In the rim:
MONE NO AVR CIVI GEDANENSIS 80 + (ring) +.
