Lot description
Grade: F-VF
Reference: Kopicki 9009 (R4)

Corrosive surface on the reverse side. Weaker tone.

On the reverse, an ink number from an old collection.

The reign of Grand Master Winrych von Kniprode was a period of monetary reform. In response to the increasing presence of large, foreign coinage in circulation, the impact of the "invasion" of Prague pennies, and the low purchasing power of the monastic brakteat fenigs, he introduces three new coin types.

The largest of these is the half-jewel(halbscoter). A denomination introduced in a reform carried out around 1364, before the first shekels were minted. With an iconography reminiscent of well-recognized European coins.

Today it is a typologically rare coin, since, like the "quarters", its issue remained only a one-off. As we can read in the brochure "Teutonic Coins" by Marta Męclewska:"They are therefore rarely found in finds, and we note very few known varieties."
