A beautiful work by the Wroclaw medalist Jan Buchheim, active in Silesia in the 17th century.
Minted to commemorate the Peace of Oliva of 1660. The peace treaty concluded between Sweden and the Republic of Poland on May 3, 1660, ending the Swedish Deluge.
Very rare at auction today, as in the past. This is confirmed by the high degree of rarity in the Hutten-Czapski catalog.
This medal is known from two varieties, differing in the side depicting the panorama of the city from the land side. The present one is a variety without a cartouche with the name of the city at the bottom, with the sentence FULMINE DOPOSITO (freely translated: after the thunder has ceased). Browsing the Polish archives for this variety, we came to only one listing (from 2011!).
On the obverse is a depiction of a view of the city from the sea, at the mouth of the Vistula River, with a beautiful fleet of ships in the foreground. In the rim is the maxim IAM VENTI POSUERE(the winds have already died down).
On both sides the signature I.B. (Jan Buchheim).
