A print in tin of a very rare medal of Augustus II the Strong.
This is an issue commemorating the king's return to Dresden on December 31, 1703 (PRID[ie] KL(Kalendas) IANVARII MDCCIV -the day before the calends of January 1704).
Having a propaganda character. Referring in its meaning to the triumphant returns of Roman emperors, with the maxim AVGVSTO REDVCI (in honor of the returning Augustus). Depicting the king wearing a laurel wreath - a symbol of the victors - when in fact he was returning to Dresden after a series of lost clashes with the Swedes in the Northern War (including the Battle of Pultusk and the loss of Poznan).
Beautiful state of preservation. Mint. With mirror.
Signed C.W. (Christian Wermuth).
