A large, impressive medal minted during the reign of Ladislaus IV to commemorate the 1635 truce in Sztumska Wieś. A peace pact concluded between the Republic of Poland and Sweden after the so-called War of the Vistula Estuary.
It's a medal colloquially known as the medal of two masters, since one of its varieties was signed by two famous Gdansk medalists - Sebastian Dadler and his pupil Jan Höhn the elder.
And while typologically it is one of the few available medals of the time of Royal Poland, it is rare in this stamped variety.
It is the work of Höhn himself, signed on the plate with the inscription DEO (without the signature S.D.), differing in the arrangement of the caduceus, the ribbons, among other things. Described more extensively in a video on our Youtube channel, on the occasion of the sale so far of the only piece of this variety we had on offer (chiseled, with engraving). The present piece is natural, with no unusual defects or damage.
Obverse: allegories of Faith (with a scepter with a solar disk) and Piety (with an olive branch) holding hands, with the panorama of Gdansk in the background, under the name of God in Hebrew letters. In the rim:
FELIX TERRA FIDES PIETATI UBI IUNCTA TRIUMPHAT(Happy land where faith united with piety triumphs).
Reverse: allegories of Peace (with a sword encircled by a ribbon) and Justice (with a caduceus) while kissing. Between the figures two plaques with the words DEO (to God) and PROXImO (to neighbor). In the rim:
PAX CUM IUSTITIA FORA TEMPIA ET RURA CORONAT(Justice with peace crowns villages, towns and churches).
