Ducat - this royal gold denomination was minted throughout the reign of King Stanislaw Augustus, although mintages of most vintages were small. Poniatowski began minting it with the beginning of his reign, making the first attempts as early as 1765. For more than 25 years it was the highest denomination of Poniatowski's minting, until 1794, when, during the Kosciuszko Insurrection, a 1.5 and 3 ducat coin was introduced following the example of the French louisd'or, respectively.
The present ducat, dating from 1789, is a rare, minted in a low mintage (only a few thousand pieces).
The type with a royal portrait without a ribbon in its hair (minted between 1786 and 1791) and the inscription AUREUS.... in a laurel wreath.
