A rare 13th century Poznan denarius of one of the sons of Ladislaus Odonicus.
It is still a mysterious issue, which, due to the name on the obverse of the coin (VOLDSIT on the side with a prince with a sword and palm tree), was attributed to the dukes of Wielkopolska of that name (Laskonogi or Odonic). Currently, in the context of Boris Paszkiewicz's research, its dating has been shifted to 1253-1257.
The iconography of its reverse is interesting. On it we see a bust in a robe, facing left, with his hands raised. It has been interpreted as both a bishop and a non-female figure - most likely the Virgin Mary.
Pieces of coins of this type, including the present piece, bear the letter P , in which Boris Paszkiewicz sees the initial of the name of Prince Przemysl I (more in Numismatic News 1/2004).
Very nicely struck for this type. In the patina of an old collection.
